Audrey’s Post:

More than four decades ago, the concept of family-centered services was introduced to the public; emphasizing the importance of family regarding the well-being of children. Family-centered services allow families to work with providers in making an informed decision regarding the services of their children. This approach is essential as the family is more knowledgeable about the child’s needs and abilities and will be able to identify a service that is befitting for the child (Bamm & Rosenbaum, 2018). According to the National Resource Center for Family Centered Practice, “Family-Centered Services are based upon the belief that the best place for children to grow up is in a family and the most effective way to ensure children’s safety, permanency, and well-being is to provide services that engage, involve, strengthen, and support families (2020). What stood out to me about the history of family-centered services are the components that make the services effective; other than family engagement, other components include “community-based services for those who may be at risk of experiencing more serious problems, intensive and focused in-home services directed at preventing family disruption, family involvement and guidance when a period of out-of-home placement is necessary, and strong family support following adoption in order to prevent subsequent disruptions and further trauma” (National Resource Center for Family Centered Practice, 2020).

Each year, millions of children are removed from their families for various reasons such as abuse, neglect, parental drug abuse, etc., and the primary goal of child welfare services is the safety of children. While child welfare services are primarily focused on protecting the children from harm, an essential focus is preserving existing family units, whether immediate, extended, or adoptive families (Pecora et al., 2009). I find the number of children that are removed from their families to be staggering, but what I have realized is that there are broader issues that should be addressed, which will impact/help in reducing the number of children being removed. For example, research have shown that people who are victims of abuse are more likely to become abusers if they do not get help; parents battling addiction are incapable of providing proper care to the children, thus leading to abuse or neglect. My point is, while the primary goal should always be the safety of children, we must address the causes that are leading to children being removed, so that a solution is established to help prevent and reduce the number of children being removed from families.
