a. Describe the federal legislative process in which a law is enacted involving the U.S. House, Senate, and President. 

b. Discuss how the United States Code (USC) differs from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Provide a website for the USC and a website for the CFR. 

c. Explain the differences between case law and statutory law. 

d. Discuss how criminal law differs from civil law. 

e. The Exxon Valdez criminal case is discussed on page 15. Do some additional research to explain the case. Do you think it was reasonable for the courts to forgive ExxonMobil $125,000,000 “in recognition of its cooperation in cleaning up the spill and paying certain private claims”? 

f. Describe federalism and its mandate that, when disagreements occur, federal laws trump state laws. Give an example of a federal law voiding a state law. Why do environmental laws tend to be federal? 

g. Describe the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and its search warrant requirements relative to industries that pollute. 

h. Explain the Takings Clause of the U.S. Constitution’s Fifth Amendment.
