FORUM POST 1:
What effect might a lack of trust in the organization and its leadership play in the Marine’s resistance to undue psychological influences?
The effect of a lack of trust in a Marine’s organization can lead to many complications within the unit. Hazing, sexual harassment, and assault, bullying, and ostracizing are examples of what can cause Marines to lose trust. When I was in my first unit, another company had a hazing scenario where the newly promoted Lance Corporal was subjected to blood pinning. The Marine had ended bleeding through both his shirt and blouse on one side, while the other side got jammed into their collar bone. The company was getting ready for a deployment, so neither the company nor the unit took action about what happened to the Marine.
He ended up being transferred out from the company to the company I was in because they prioritized the company deploying over his well-being. His work became degraded and was involved in more problems because he did not respect or trust his command. Ultimately, he was administratively removed from the Marine Corps after being caught doing illegal drugs on base to cope with the hardships they have had while in.
I believe that there are some commands who cannot understand the idea that the Marine Corps was an escape for some individuals, and when they feel betrayed they do not have family or friends to rely on. I have unfortunately known too many Marines who have taken their life because they were let down by their unit and this act can also cause a tremendous amount of turmoil within other Marines in the unit.
FORUM POST 2:
As a SNCO, what is your most important core leader function?
Good Evening Class,
I believe, as an SNCO, the most crucial core leader function is mitigation. As Marines, we face stressful times, From working on tasks, meeting deadlines, and training both technical and tactical. Theses stressors are to be expected. Its all part of the job description. Those stressors develop our ability to perform under pressure and in moments of chaos or uncertainties. Mitigation focuses more on minimizing unnecessary stressors, and the necessary, reducing stressors that we as Marines face that are not essential to training and mission accomplishment. “Resilience, courage, and fortitude can be likened to leaky buckets that are constantly being drained by stress (see chap. 3). To keep them from running dry, these buckets must be frequently refilled through sleep, rest, recreation, and spiritual renewal. Continuing this metaphor, the leader function of mitigation is crucial to preventing more holes from being punched in these leaky buckets than are absolutely necessary.” (MCRP 6-11C, pg 1-18) Mitigation is accomplished by identifying risk factors and implementing controls. Also, mitigation is accomplished, maintaining cohesion and rewarding accomplishments, ensuring that Marines gain a sense of importance and job satisfaction.
