What is identity? Our book describes identity as “constellations of labels that establish social expectations that we have on ourselves and others” (Stewart, 2012. P.77). No person is viewed the same by any one person. We each have a different role with each other. For instance, to one person I may be kind, understanding, and more forgiving in our crossing of paths, but to someone that in I have a more personal relationship with, I may be more stern, and have higher expectations from he, or she. Being viewed differently by people in unavoidable. No one is the same every day, with everyone. I believe identity has more to do with what we answer to, meaning what we know, and feel about ourselves.With that being said, no one is without flaws. We each can learn and grow with each other, from each other.

In the first video about identity, the lady that was dominating the conversation with Alia seemed too focused on Alis’s nationality. She was not trying to get to know Alia on a personal level. The lady’s statements, and questions should have been embarrassing for her, and the way she was being seemed very uncomfortable to Alis. Sadly, this happens too often in our society. People seem to get too focused on the outer, and not the inner person.

When it comes to communication, no two people are going to view the conversation exactly alike. In the textbook interaction between Heather and Jan, (Stewart, 2012. P.75-76), the two walks away with a totally different view of what had occurred. There are times after an interaction takes place between people that one, or both walk away wondering what the hock just happened. These moments are unavoidable and must be worked through on an individual level. The less one takes personal, the better off life can be.

The video, Misunderstood, the older gentleman is trying to relate to the younger boy. He is using personal life lessons to guide him towards our Savior, Jesus Christ. He is trying to also help the youngster understand that he is more than how people view him and tells him of his own personal testimony that led him to Jesus.

Webster’s dictionary defines identity as, “the distinguishing character or personality of an individual: individuality” (Merriam-Webster, 2020). This definition fits the traditional Western interpretation that identity is individualistic and self-contained, whereas newer definitions of identity are much broader, coming from more of an Eastern perspective. The Stewart text defines identity as, “interlocking features that mark how persons behave and respond to others”, (Stewart, 2012, p.77). In essence, our identity is a myriad of features that establish how we see ourselves and how others perceive us in return.

In studying the aspects of how communication constructs identities, we find that identity is much more than our individual sense of self and our outer appearance. In essence, “identities are something that we do rather than what we are” (Stewart, 2012, p.77). We can dress a certain way and strive to have a particular appearance, but all of the elements in how we communicate with others will greatly determine how others actually perceive us. Additionally, we each carry different identities into different social situations. For example, we have a specific identity as a student, another identity as a coworker, and another identity as a parent. Each of these social arenas incorporates different relationships, and different modes of communicating with others. And in each exchange, “the people involved will be directly or indirectly constructing definitions of themselves and responding to the definitions offered by others” (Stewart, 2012, p. 76).

In watching the presentations on identity, we see that identities can be both avowed and ascribed (Stewart, 2012, p. 82). We engage in a specific identity that we assign to ourselves (avow), and others appoint an identity to us (ascribe) that we may not be in agreement with. Because we are multidimensional beings, we don’t want to be quickly summed up by a hurried first impression. Through continual, mutual exchanges of both verbal and nonverbal cues in conversations, we help to construct who we are, and how we hope to be perceived by others.
