If workers fear for their position in the workplace, they will either work harder or slack off. If the workers are certain that their job position is safe and expect a positive outcome from the work they do, they will be more motivated to accomplish their work tasks. There are different factors that motivate people including growth, achievement, recognition, and advancement, so it is important for the employees to know that they are appreciated and need for the company’s success. If I could choose only one motivational theory to raise employee morale, I would choose the goal-setting theory. This would motivate my employees and enhance their performance. When the goals are reached, I would give feedback and recognition to my employees to make sure they know that their work does not go unnoticed. This feedback will even further motivate the employees even after the months of remote work.

While these challenges can give leaders a set back, they can easily be overcome. Each company is facing its own challenges while having employees work from home and leaders are not alone. Leaders should consider seeing how each team member is doing individually, such as how they stay motivated throughout the day, if they face challenges while working at home, or if they face challenges when not having the same resources as they would in the office. Leaders should also consider giving employees the opportunities to ask questions about their job and the work environment that might concern them at this time. The questions can be anonymous, or whatever the leader chooses to be fit for the company. Leaders could also give rewards to those who consistently do their work which would motivate them.

The theory I would choose to raise employee morale would have to be to keep meetings at general discussion topics. While knowing what is going on in every aspect of the business is beneficial to keep employees on task, keeping meetings to general topics can give them a mental break of just basic ideas instead of making them come up with weekly updates. This can give meetings a more relaxed feel for everyone and to not plant so much stress on each individual. While basing it off of general topics, it can also give employees options of mentioning things that might not have to do specifically with their job, but can help the team overall.
